JSW Energy Begins Green Hydrogen Production At Vijayanagar Plant

Bengaluru, Nov 11 (KNN) JSW Energy Limited has commenced operations at its first green hydrogen manufacturing unit — now the largest in India.

The plant, located adjacent to JSW Steel’s facility in Vijayanagar, Karnataka, will supply green hydrogen directly to the steelmaker’s Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) unit, helping reduce fossil fuel dependence and support low-carbon steel production.

The project, commissioned under Tranche I of the Production Linked Incentive Scheme of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, will deliver 3,800 tonnes per annum (TPA) of green hydrogen and 30,000 TPA of green oxygen to JSW Steel under a seven-year offtake agreement, reported ANI.

It forms part of JSW Energy’s 6,800-TPA allocation under the SECI-run SIGHT programme.

JSW Energy has also signed an MoU to gradually scale supply to 85,000–90,000 TPA of green hydrogen and 720,000 TPA of green oxygen by 2030, supporting India’s target of producing around 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by the end of the decade.

Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and CEO, JSW Energy, said,  “The project is a key milestone in our country’s clean energy journey and reflects our unwavering commitment to support India’s transition toward a low-carbon economy and decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors such as steel.”

JSW Energy currently has 13.3 GW of installed capacity and a total locked-in portfolio of 30.5 GW, including projects under construction.

The company also has 29.4 GWh of locked-in energy storage capacity across pumped hydro and battery systems. It aims to reach 30 GW of power generation and 40 GWh of storage capacity by FY30, and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
