The national average price for regular gasoline on Monday dropped again to $2.952 per gallon.
The latest price marks a week of declining gas prices, including surpassing the $3-per-gallon threshold for the first time since May 2021, according to AAA. Fuel costs eclipsed this barrier on December 2. The current national average fuel cost is at its lowest since May 2021, when it was $2.985 per gallon at the pumps, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. As of Monday, 36 states in the country have a statewide average gasoline price of less than $3 per gallon.
Affordable fuel costs were a staple of the first term of President Donald Trump from Jan. 2017 to Jan. 2021. After establishing record highs during the Biden administration, including the highest national average gas price in history in 2022, lower gas prices were a campaign promise made by then-candidate Donald Trump in 2024. Since the beginning of his second term, gas prices have fluctuated but have remained largely steady in 2025, falling in a range of prices that did not exceed $3.21 per gallon. During the summer months, there was no customary surge in gas prices.
Gas prices had been flirting with a $3-per-gallon price point since the beginning of autumn. By Oct. 20, the petroleum analysis company GasBuddy claimed that the national average price for regular gas had dropped below $3 per gallon. However, they were primarily alone in their projections, as other gas analyses continued to show national average prices above $3 per gallon, including those from AAA.
Despite the current national average price for gas being under $3 per gallon, prices vary throughout the U.S., depending on the region of the country. The West Coast has the most expensive gas prices in the country, while states in and around the Gulf of America tend to have the most affordable gas prices. As of Monday, 36 states had average gas prices under $3 per gallon.
In the Delmarva region, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia have all surpassed the $3-per-gallon mark. Virginia is the least expensive in the area, with an average price of $2.857 per gallon. This is followed by Delaware at $2.891 per gallon and Maryland at $2.914. Washington, D.C., remains the area with the highest average gas prices, at $3.195 per gallon, nearly 25 cents higher than the national average.

Oklahoma has the lowest average gas prices in the country, at $2.366 per gallon, according to AAA. Colorado is next at $2.473. This marks the first time Colorado has been among the states with the lowest gas prices in over two years. Texas is next at $2.50 per gallon, followed by Arkansas at $2.51 per gallon. Mississippi has the fifth-lowest statewide average gas prices in the country at $2.552 per gallon.
California has the most expensive gas prices in the country, significantly higher than the national average, with a cost of $4.469 per gallon. California’s Mono County has an average price of $5.685 per gallon. Hawaii is next, with a slightly lower price of $4.443 per gallon. This is followed by Washington state at $4.10 per gallon. Oregon is next at $3.71 per gallon, followed by Alaska at $3.651.
