Fortnite Artist Fights Back Against Generative AI Accusations from Fans 1

A Fortnite artist whose work has been caught up in a generative AI controversy has fought back against the claims by showing the process behind his work.

The juggernaut Battle Royale was taken to task this week in the aftermath of its latest season’s release for featuring some suspicious looking posters, including one with a character that has four toes.

In and among the accusations was a Spray inspired by Marty McFly, which some users on Reddit and ResetEra argued resembled the Studio Ghibli filter that went viral on social media last year.

Sean Dove, the long-time Fortnite freelancer who created the artwork, has since taken to Instagram to show the process behind his work, basically confirming it was created from scratch.

He gradually reveals all of the layers, showing this was definitely a piece created by hand. However, he does admit that he pulled the clocks in the background off Google Images, and says it’s “possible I grabbed an AI clock and wasn’t paying attention”.

Clearly, though, this is an original piece of work and shows the challenge artists face moving forwards: even when not using AI, fans may ultimately accuse of them of doing so.
