Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, launched a sharp attack on the Modi government over the alleged lathi-charge on Staff Selection Commission (SSC) aspirants protesting at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan. The leaders accused the Centre of ignoring the youth’s concerns, mishandling recruitment examinations, and suppressing dissent.
Rahul Gandhi, in a post on X, accused the government of trying to silence students and teachers who were holding a peaceful protest demanding fair examinations. He described the incident as shameful and the hallmark of a cowardly government, asserting that the youth had merely sought employment and justice but were instead subjected to force. Gandhi further alleged that the Modi government had initially stolen votes, later permitted irregularities in examinations, failed to provide adequate job opportunities, and was now attempting to suppress citizens rights.
The protest on Sunday witnessed significant participation from SSC candidates and trainers who were demanding greater transparency in the recruitment process. The commission has faced persistent complaints regarding abrupt exam cancellations, server crashes, unresponsive systems, and examination centres being allocated hundreds of kilometres away from candidates’ homes. These issues, combined with rising unemployment, have triggered growing resentment among students.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also criticised the alleged police action, stating that the government had developed a habit of jeopardising the future of the youth. He stated that stealing the future of students has become routine under the Modi government and described the alleged lathi-charge by what he termed the government’s puppet police as highly condemnable.
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi also condemned the incident, describing it as inhuman and shameful. She alleged that under the BJP government, corruption in recruitment processes, exam rigging, and repeated paper leaks were undermining the future prospects of young Indians.
The Delhi Police, however, rejected the allegations of any lathi-charge. A senior officer reported that approximately 1,500 protesters had assembled at the site, and around 100 of them refused to disperse despite repeated requests. Of those who remained, 44 were detained, the officer clarified, adding that no use of force was involved.
The SSC, which oversees recruitment for various central government positions, recently carried out its Phase 13 examinations from July 24 to August 1, covering 194 centres across 142 cities. The exam, taken by nearly five lakh candidates, witnessed multiple disruptions, sparking widespread protests in Delhi and massive backlash on social media.
