While we may have a while to wait until we can tuck into The Witcher 4, there’s an underrated Geralt of Rivia adventure that you can try out in the meantime – a side quest, if you will. I’m talking about the time he appeared as a guest character in the Bandai Namco fighting game, Soulcalibur 6 (complete with a unique storyline to justify his presence in that universe). It’s a cool crossover, and right now it’s an enormous 84% off at Humble Bundle.

Soulcalibur 6 stands apart from other fighting games in its genre. Sure, it’s fast-paced, fluid, and wildly fun, just like Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter, but it brings a unique charm all its own. It’s the kind of game where you can unleash your imagination, designing custom characters like Zoidberg from Futurama, or even turn memes into playable characters (I’m looking at you Bernie Sanders) and watch them clash in glorious, weapon-based combat. It’s the kind of customization that helps make the best multiplayer games even more enjoyable. At the same time, it’s not just meaningless chaos; it also cares about lore and doesn’t just drop characters into the fray with little to no explanation.

Geralt’s storyline has him investigating a sorceress in his own world who, according to hearsay, has been summoning demons. When he confronts her, she opens up a portal that pulls him through to another world (the world of Soulcalibur, naturally). Once there, he starts looking for a way to get back home, but in true fighting game fashion, ends up getting in scraps with just about everyone he meets along the way.

Like the earlier games, SC6 uses an eight-way run directional system, which essentially gives you eight directions of movement, while Guard Impact mechanics make it possible to momentarily stun your opponent when you perfectly time your block. New to this installment is the Reversal Edge counterattack, which triggers a rock-paper-scissors style mini game to determine who gets the next hit. Then there’s Soul Charge, a risk-reward feature that grants you buffs, but at a cost to your Soul Gauge, making your guarding less effective.

Despite fairly nuanced mechanics, Soulcalibur is an easy game to jump into, regardless of your skill. My fighting style is the ancient art of button mashing, and I loved that I could do this and still win. It didn’t take me very long to grasp combos and different attacks, either, which is a breath of fresh air compared to something like Injustice 2, which I could never beat my partner at, and this sucked the fun out of the game. The one thing I will say is that blocking is important and is something worth learning early on.

The roster of characters is pretty great too. Obviously, there’s Geralt (who’s even voiced by his Witcher 3 VA, Doug Cockle), but you’ve also got the monstrous knight, Nightmare, the otherworldly Voldo (who squirms around like a strange insect), and Asteroth, a giant, destructive golem. The only one I don’t care for is Ivy; I simply don’t understand how her clothes don’t just fall down mid-fight.

If you’re eager for a fresh taste of Geralt-flavored action and Soulcalibur 6 is sounding like your kind of game, don’t miss your chance to get it at a steep discount via Humble Bundle. You only have until Thursday, 3rd September 2025, to get your digital copy of Soulcalibur 6 for the cheap price of $14.39 / £10.73.
