Upstart German retailer Aldi reckons Aussies will save about $3000 a year shopping at its grocery stores.

The company made the bold claim on Monday, saying it could deliver a 16.8 per cent “price gap” over its competitors Woolworths, Coles and IGA.

“Aldi’s Price Promise is clear, we simply won’t be beaten on the cost of your weekly shop,” Aldi Australia chief commercial officer Jordan Lack said.

“It’s been at the heart of who we are since 2001, and we’re committed to delivering both value and quality in every aisle.

“Our upgraded range gives shoppers even more reasons to do their full weekly shop with us, without paying more.”

The $3000 figure comes from internal company data.

The price gap between Aldi and competitors has been estimated using Aldi internal price data and Aldi provided price comparisons for major competitors, the company said.

This was then translated into a price saving calculation for Aldi customers covering July 1 last year to June 30 this year.

The March quarterly Choice survey, which tracks the price of 14 common grocery items across major supermarket chains, suggests shoppers could nab substantial savings at Aldi supermarkets.

The consumer advocacy group found the cost of baskets at Aldi were lower than Coles, Woolworths and IGA.

An Aldi basket came in at about $51, while Coles and Woolworths were both priced at about $67.

IGA baskets remain the most expensive, the survey found, coming in at nearly $75.

“While others rely on temporary drop and lock discounts on a limited range of products, we consistently review all our prices to make sure our customers are always getting the best value at the checkout,” Mr Lack said.

Aldi also flagged a upgrade to its core range on Monday, with 250 new products added to its shelves.

Some of the new items include El Tora crunchy corn taco shells, Asia Green Garden sriracha sauce hot, World Kitchen garlic naan bread and Bakers Life spiced fruit buns.
