Jewish Care celebrated its dedicated aged care staff on August 7 at Gary Smorgon House, honoring the incredible cultural diversity within its workforce. To mark the occasion, staff members showcased traditional attire from their countries of origin, adding a vibrant touch to the event.
They were warmly thanked for their hard work by Jewish Care CEO Gail Smith and CEO of Aging Australia Tom Symondson. Liberal Caulfield MP David Southwick and Glen Eira mayor Simone Zmood were also in attendance.
Rabbi Yosef Nerenberg, Gary Smorgon House Rabbi and Jewish Care’s Director of Jewish Life, spoke poignantly: “Sometimes we can get lost in day to day activities and day to day jobs and tasks, and we forget who is responsible for all of the good that we have in our life. We have so many staff … a diverse workforce from many different countries, all coming together for the same purpose, looking after our aged and therefore to you today, we say thank you.”
Smith reflected on Jewish Care’s rich legacy since its establishment in 1848.
“That’s 177 years of compassion, continuity and commitment. Today, that tradition is carried forward by 870 dedicated staff supporting more than 360 residents and over 1000 clients in the community, including importantly, 500 Holocaust survivors with kindness, skill and unwavering dedication. From our youngest team member at just 19 years of age to our most experienced at 77, each of our staff members contribute something special. They bring joy, dignity and connection to our community.”
